The organization – see for yourselves! Through partnerships with local communities, Room to Read works to create educational opportunities and establish the required infrastructure (schools, libraries, scholarships). Its goal is to enable communities to help themselves through close and mutually respectful collaboration. Since different communities have different needs, Room to Read offers a number of different programs to provide the best quality educational opportunities. The organization operates like a commercial enterprise and is very much results-oriented, focused on keeping overheads low and maximizing the impact of donations. According to Charity Navigator the most effective charities are those which spend a maximum of 25% of the annual budget on overheads / fund raising and 75% on actual programs. Room to Read devotes 85% of overall budget to its programs. For more information, see the annual report. Room to Read has won the Fast Company/Monitor Group Social Capitalist award for the last five years (since its inception) – a distinction few nonprofits have achieved!
