Room to Read Trek – why I am doing this

John Wood launched Room to Read after a trek through Nepal where he experienced the shocking lack of books first hand. Driven to help, John quit his senior executive position with Microsoft and founded this organization to work with rural villages to build sustainable solutions to their educational challenges.

While I am not going to quit my job, I do want to help. And organizing a trekking tour for the benefit of Room to Read was one way to do that.

M’Goun (4, 071m) is one of the highest mountains in the Atlas range. Along with the personal challenge I want to address a much broader one and raise funds so we can address some of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals: universal primary education for children, gender equality and empowerment of women, and end to poverty and hunger (to name 3 of its 8 goals).

Why M’Goun and not something local?
4, 000m high mountains are special. Going there requires more than the usual hike in the Taunus (the area I live in). And the same is true for my commitment to Room to Read.

The hiking tour will take us through a fascinating landscape with rocky hills, gorges, valleys, fields and villages. If you want to join me, you will need to be in good physical condition, be able to walk for about 6 hours per day and have the right equipment.
